Waste Minimisation At The Market

Waste Minimisation At The Market

In February 2010, we launched the Market kitchen to show people how to make the most of the produce that you'll find at the Market. You’ll find a showcase of Market products and produce here from time to time.

  • Leftover food and produce is collected by Kiwi Harvest each Saturday lunchtime, which gets distributed to the local community groups in need

  • Take any food waste to be composted

  • We maintain a volunteer roster to ensure our waste streams do not become contaminated

  • We make hundreds of recycled net curtain produce bags to give away for gold coin donations

  • New vendors are strongly encouraged to use sustainable packaging/no packaging.  We strongly encourage ReUse with our vendors & customers. Many of our vendors accept back their own clean packaging, eg. jars, bottles, egg cartons, rubber bands, their own fruit punnets (not supermarket branded ones please), clean plant pots, etc.   Look for vendors who have the ReUse posters on their stalls.

  • We promote BYO cups, bags and plates, cutlery.  We have libraries of these for free use, and promote the use of the Again Again cup system: https://www.againagain.co/eu-how-it-works

How you can help

  • You can be part of our fun waste educator team. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers, whether you are an international student, a Duke of Edinburgh participant or someone passionate about the environment, we would love to hear from you.
