Abdal's Gourmet Foods

Abdals new truck

Delicious Syrian street food and condiments.

Visiting Abdal at his commercial kitchen in the Kaikourai Rugby clubrooms was such a treat. No sooner had we arrived than he was whipping up some delicious falafel for us to try. Next was the wonderful apple cider vinegar that he makes from scratch. Abdal loves to share food from his Syrian homeland. His kindness and generosity is only matched by the quality of the food he makes.
Abdal is a trained chef and since arriving in Dunedin with his family in 2017 he has established himself on the Dunedin food scene. He regularly caters large, family style feasts where the public can enjoy a vast and extremely tasty buffet of Syrian favourites. They are an ideal way to immerse yourself into another food adventure.

Abdal makes everything from scratch. At the market he attracts a crowd because of the novel Saj Dome that, gas fired, cooks his delicious saj flatbreads. The dome is like an enormous upside-down wok where 2 or 3 saj can heat and toast to the perfect level of crispy goodness. Topped with Za’atar and Shatta, along with other toppings as you like, these really are worth trying and trying and trying!!!
All Abdal’s ingredients are halal, including the apple cider vinegar that can only be consumed after 40 days once all the alcohol has turned to vinegar.

Abdal regularly voluntarily caters for the Muslim community. He is very community minded and can be relied upon to lend a hand whenever asked.
