Ingredients

  • Makes 24 Pieces.
  • Ingredients: Syrup:
  • 300mls water
  • 250gms sugar
  • 250gms honey
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 Tablespoon rose water or orange water (optional)
  • Ingredients: Pastry and Filling:
  • 125 gms butter melted
  • 350 gms chopped walnuts
  • Quarter teaspoon of ground cardamom seeds or more to taste
  • 2x 200 gm packets of filo pastry

Baklava

Method

  • Make syrup by placing all ingredients in a pot and bring to boil
  • Boil for 5 mins
  • Cool and pour into a jug and place in fridge while you assemble and bake the baklava
  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius
  • Grab a roasting dish or a foil roasting dish approx 23 x 23 cm square
  • Brush base of dish with some melted butter
  • Brush each sheet of the first filo packet with butter and layer each one lining the bottom and side of the dish
  • Sprinkle the filo with chopped nuts and cardamom
  • Then repeat the process with the rest of the filo as before with the butter and layer on top of the chopped nuts
  • Trim the sides of the pastry with a sharp knife cut across the filo to form 24 pieces
  • Either square or diamond shapes
  • Bake 30 mins until golden
  • Pour over half the cooled syrup and after a few mins pour over the rest
  • Enjoy!
